For cleaner stencil edges, apply several light coats of paint instead of one heavy coat. When using spray paint, keep the can moving and avoid applying too much paint in one area.

A stencil brush, sponge, roller, airbrush, or temporary stencil adhesive can also help achieve cleaner results depending on your project.
